They arrived in Berlin around dinner.
Wow, this airport is massive. Masie walked around Brandenburg Airport with her head tilted upward looking at the ceiling and all the artwork and how big it felt. Her father had to jerk her by the arm before she walked into one of the security guards.
“Pay attention to where you are going, Masie. You almost bumped into someone. I know you’re excited but you have to be more careful.”
“Sorry, dad, I’ll be more careful.” She tilted her tablet upward and took pictures of the ceiling and then followed her father to luggage carousel. They rented a car and drove to the hotel, which was located close to the city proper. Masie looked around the lobby as George checked. She caught a glimpse of the same man from Austria entering an elevator. He locked eyes with Masie until the elevator doors shut. She didn’t realize she was making her way to the elevators until her father tapped her on the shoulder.
“Masie, what is it? You’re distracted.”
“It’s that man from the palace. He just got on the elevator.”
“I think your imagination is getting-”
“George, I think she’s right.” Minnie interrupted while placing a hand on his shoulder, “That is the same man. She may be onto something. You’re the one that’s not paying attention.” He turned to look at Minnie as Masie went to cue an elevator, “I’m not trying to alarm her, Minnie. I have noticed. I just didn’t want to make a big deal about it in front of Masie.”
“She not stupid, George. She’s more observant-”
“The elevator’s here!” Masie stepped in and pressed the button to keep the door open.
George stood next to Masie, “Our things should already be in our rooms.” “Oh, cool, it shouldn’t take us long to unpack and figure out where we are going tomorrow.”
“Nope, but you have to promise me that you are going to be more careful. I didn’t want to agree with you about the man, but you are right, and if someone else is interested in our little treasure hunt, we need to tread wisely.”
“Yes, sir.”
Upon entering the room, George dialed Alicia. His wife picked up after two rings, “George! How was the trip?”
“We got to Berlin. Everything went smoothly after Chicago. We’re unpacking now, and Masie couldn’t be more excited.” “Oh, good, I thought the long trip would have put her off a little.”
“Are you kidding? Every layover was an adventure for her. She’s loving every minute. We’re going settle in and then get something to eat.”
“Good, I can go to bed. It’s around eleven at night here.”
“Oh, I forget about the six hour difference.” Alicia chuckled, “You’re as bad as our daughter sometimes. Goodnight, dear.”
“Goodnight.”
That evening was spent picking out and going to a restaurant that featured foods Masie was dying to try. After dinner, they walked around downtown and looked at the shops, people, and cars. With the help of a translator, they took the train around the city, and back to the hotel. Masie knocked on her grandmother’s door. Minnie opened and let Masie enter.
“What is it, Masie?” “We’re here. Do you have any ideas as to where to look next?” Minnie patted on the bed beside her, “I have a couple of relative we can talk to, but I think we can figure that out after a good rest and breakfast tomorrow. Now, we need to unwind and let sleep take us.” Masie hugged her grandmother, “Thanks for talking mom into letting me do this.” Minnie laughed and hugged her back, “You’re more than welcome, sweetie. Now, get back to your room and get ready for bed. We still have our adventure to rest up for.” “Right!”
