Black Noblesse: Prologue Review

I know I haven’t done one of these in a WHILE, but when your wallet screams bloody murder every time you open it, you are limited in how many reviews you can do. So, they are few and far between.

I found the link to this one on Twitter, and, to my surprise, it was free to read.

The creator was highlighted in the latest newsletter, but I felt a review of their work was in order as well.

The writer is known simply as Copoki on Twitter. They can followed there and on Instagram.

The artist is Dominic Pinto. I could not find any links to them.

The story…

The prologue, as prologues go, is short as is standard. You don’t want it to be a whole story. It is an exposition dump in the form of a history lesson for the manga’s world-building. This is a common trap for exposition, but it was handled fairly well. The five pages went quickly, meaning it wasn’t a slog to read. As a matter of fact, I found myself reading it a couple of times to make sure I understood the world in which I was stepping.
It felt like I was about to watch an anime.

The Art…

Linework and shading: I loved it. Even the mapping was impressive. The panels made the story come alive.
The little details also made the artwork top-notch.

The Lettering…

I can’t talk about it enough. As a calligrapher, it’s beautifully done.

The Rating…

3.5 out of 5 Espresso shots.

Overall, I found myself wanting to know more about the world, but wished it was presented differently. It was reminiscent of an anime intro, which isn’t bad, but could have been better.

Until Next Time,
